Operatives from the Police Crime Intelligence Directorate have arrested a 33-year-old man for defrauding members of the public of millions of shillings after promising to take them to meet Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Mubarak Iguma a resident of Elegu convinced boda boda riders, taxi operators, salon operators, bar owners and market vendors among others that he was one of the leaders of the Patriotic League of Uganda and promised to arrange a meeting for them with Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“He told the victims that he was one of the leaders of MK Movement before it turned into PLU and promised to link them up to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and asked them for money to register them and be issued with MK Movement cards,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said.

“He also promised victims to bring them to Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba but also promised to deliver their complaints and concerns to the General for support.”

He noted that at least 200 people fell victim to the suspect who asked for ssh10 million from each person as membership fees.

Enanga said on arrest, the suspect was found with fake MK Movement cards and copies of MK movement constitution that he was to dish out to his victims after paying.

“He will face charges of obtaining money by false pretence and personation. Efforts are in place to trace for his accomplice Abdul Karim Matovu who is currently on the run.”

The police spokesperson sounded a warning to fraudsters and conmen that the long arm of the law will get them wherever they try to  hide.
